Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

Have you noticed redness, itching, or excessive watering in your eye? You might have pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis. This common eye condition is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that lines the inside of your eyelid and covers the white part of your eyeball.

Symptoms and Causes of Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

The telltale signs of pink eye include:

  • Redness in the white of the eye.

  • Itchiness or a gritty feeling in the eye.

  • Watery discharge that may be clear, white, yellow, or green.

  • Increased tear production.

  • Crusting around the eyelids, especially in the morning.

  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia).

Pink eye can be caused by several factors

  1.  Viruses: Viral pink eye is very common and often associated with a cold or other respiratory infection. It's highly contagious.

  2.  Bacteria: Bacterial pink eye can also cause redness and discharge, often thicker and more pus-like than viral conjunctivitis. It's also contagious.

  3.  Allergies: Allergic pink eye occurs when your eyes react to allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. It usually affects both eyes and is accompanied by itching and watery discharge.

How Pink Eye Spreads: Prevention is Key

Pink eye spreads easily, especially the viral and bacterial forms. To prevent its transmission:

  • Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water.

  • Avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands.

  • Don't share personal items like towels, washcloths, and eyewear.

  • If you have pink eye, avoid close contact with others until you are no longer contagious (as advised by your doctor).

Treating Pink Eye

The treatment for pink eye depends on its cause:

  1. Viral Pink Eye: Usually, viral pink eye will clear up on its own within a week or two. Cool compresses and artificial tears can help relieve symptoms.

  2. Bacterial Pink Eye: Bacterial pink eye is typically treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments prescribed by an eye doctor.

  3.  Allergic Pink Eye: Allergic pink eye can often be managed with over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops or oral antihistamines. Avoiding the allergen is also crucial. In some cases, prescription eye drops may be necessary.
