What Is Corneal Topography?

Corneal topography is a non-invasive imaging test that creates a detailed map of the curvature of your cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. It's used to detect corneal irregularities such as keratoconus, evaluate irregular astigmatism, and determine candidacy for specialty contact lenses such as Ortho-K.

At Need Eye Exam PLLC, corneal mapping is already part of our comprehensive evaluation process for Ortho-K candidacy, and is available as a standalone diagnostic exam for anyone with signs of corneal irregularity.

What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive condition in which the cornea gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone-like shape, distorting vision and often causing increasing nearsightedness and irregular astigmatism. It typically begins in the teenage years or early adulthood and can progress over time if left unmonitored.

Early detection through corneal topography allows your doctor to track any changes and determine the most appropriate management plan before vision is significantly affected.

1. Anyone with worsening or irregular astigmatism that doesn't correct well with standard glasses or contacts.

2. Patients with a family history of keratoconus.

3. Anyone experiencing frequent changes to their glasses or contact lens prescription.

4. Patients being evaluated for Ortho-K or LASIK candidacy.
