Use It or Lose It: Your Vision Insurance and FSA Funds Expire Soon
Updated: Sep 27

If you have vision insurance or money sitting in an FSA, this is the time of year those benefits either get used or disappear. Most vision plans and flexible spending accounts run on a calendar year, and neither one lets you carry the full balance forward automatically. Here's what to check before December 31st.
Your Vision Insurance Benefits Reset, They Don't Roll Over
Most vision insurance plans (through an employer, Medicaid, or a marketplace plan) cover one comprehensive eye exam and a new pair of glasses or contacts on a 12-month or calendar-year cycle. If you haven't used this year's exam or eyewear benefit, it doesn't carry into next year, it simply resets, and you lose whatever you didn't use. The same goes for many contact lens allowances. If it's been close to a year since your last exam, or you haven't ordered new glasses this year, now's the time.
Your FSA Money Has an Even Harder Deadline
Flexible spending accounts are stricter than insurance. FSA funds are true "use it or lose it" money: unless your employer offers a grace period or a limited rollover, whatever is left in your account at the end of the plan year is forfeited entirely, not partially. For 2026, the maximum FSA contribution is $3,400, and employers who allow a rollover can only carry over up to $680 into 2027. That means even generous plans still leave a real amount on the table if you let the year run out. Eye exams, prescription glasses, contact lenses, and contact lens solution are all FSA-eligible, so unused funds are often easiest to spend down on vision care.
Getting It Done Before the Year Ends
December books up fast once other families realize the same thing, so it's worth acting now rather than the last week of the year. At Need Eye Exam PLLC, inside 99 Ranch Market in Carrollton, we take walk-ins Tuesday through Sunday and offer same-day and urgent visits, so you can still get seen even if you're cutting it close. Exams start at $69, frames start at $29, and we accept Medicaid along with most major vision insurance plans, so we can check your remaining benefits and FSA eligibility before your visit. Bring your insurance card and, if you have one, your FSA debit card, and we'll help you use what's yours before it resets.
Vision benefits and FSA dollars are money you've already set aside; letting them expire unused is the same as leaving a paycheck on the table. Book your comprehensive eye exam at Need Eye Exam PLLC / Vision Looky Optical, inside 99 Ranch Market in Carrollton, TX, before your benefits reset for the new year.
